In Response to Avery “Dramatic Paradox”?
Avery
highlights on important use of paradoxes: to grab the readers interest. He
states the fact that paradoxes are not technically possible because they
involve two things that cannot occur at the same time. Accordingly, this causes the reader to pay more attention
to the text than before because of the fact that the paradox is inherently contradictory.
First, I should point out that I certainly
agree with the point that Avery makes. This is truly a function of paradoxes.
However, I think that they are able to have an even more important function. I
think that a paradox forces the reader to use critical thinking skills because
they need to decide between the dilemmas that the paradox represents.
Consequently, I think that paradoxes have the ability to strengthen to critical
reasoning skills of readers. While there are numerous functions of a paradox, I
think this is one of the few central functions.
