Response to Corey “On pessimists”
Corey’s
post was on a topic that we have covered a lot in class recently: the subject
of pessimism within literature. In Corey’s
post, he stated that he understood where pessimistic view fit within
literature; however, he basically stated that he did not agree with significantly
pessimistic viewpoints.
“such an outlook on life specifically as an
artist, life seems more like a curse than a blessing, and for me it would lose
all meaning if I solely defined life as suffering, pain, and death.”
While I certainly agree with the idea that
pessimism can cause problems, I do not think that life would “lose all meaning”.
In fact, such pessimistic views often improve the works of literature that we
have discussed in class. Furthermore, I think that it is important to be
realistic more than anything. If we being logical and using good reasoning
skills leads to a pessimistic view of the world, then that’s just the way
things have to be. Good reasoning is what is important; whether that leads to a
optimistic or pessimistic view is general unimportant in comparison.
