In Response to Avery (“Q&A 8—Second Answer”)
“The basic form of my question is:
How should a teacher react if a student comes up with a theory more rational
than the teacher's?”
Of course, I agree with Avery in that
the teacher should be willing to accept the students more rational theory.
However, I think that this simple question also brings up an important fact;
one that should be acknowledged more often. I think that the teacher, in
addition to accepting the improved theory, should also challenge it in a way
that makes the student think further about it. Since one of the central aims in
education should be improving the critical thinking abilities of students, the
instructor should never just accept an opposing theory without challenging it
to a certain extent.
